Currency
Should I exchange currency?
Should I exchange currency?
Costa Rica's official currency is the colón, but you can make purchases using either colones or US dollars. While it's always handy to have cash on hand, credit cards are widely accepted at most restaurants and shops, with Visa and Mastercard being more commonly used than AMEX. We recommend checking with your banking provider to avoid any international fees.
You can withdraw cash from ATMs, which typically offer better exchange rates than airports or local banks, where additional fees may apply. ATMs are prevalent in major cities but less common in rural areas. They are generally available from 6:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., and your Guide can assist you in locating one.
