What happens during extreme weather during camping?
What happens during extreme weather during camping?
We do not expect any extreme weather conditions (excessive amounts of rain turning into flooding or ongoing thunderstorms), but in case of extreme weather your Guide will find an alternative place to sleep at a nearby accommodation with hard shelter and/or alter the itinerary on the spot. Regular rain or drops in temperature are just part of the camping experience!
I'm concerned about volcanic activity. What happens on the ground if there's an eruption/increased activity?
I'm concerned about volcanic activity. What happens on the ground if there's an eruption/increased activity?
Your safety is the top priority for TrovaTrip and our Trip Operator. Volcanic activity is very common in Iceland and your Guide will know when there is cause for concern and how to handle it. Your Guide will make any necessary itinerary adjustments with safety in mind.
Equipment

I'm visiting in the Winter, are crampons or mico-spikes needed?
Crampons are a heavy-duty traction device that would only be needed on substantial glacier hikes which are not included on your itinerary. Micro-spikes are for lighter wear and a great idea for the icy conditions in Iceland. Micro-spikes are not included but there are options locally to purchase them for a reasonable price if you don't pack them.
Will towels be provided at the hot springs?
Will towels be provided at the hot springs?
This will depend on which hot spring you're visiting. Towels are provided at Blue Lagoon but if you are planning to swim in any of the natural hot springs, then you should pack a towel. You won't be able to bring towels from the hotel because you'll be heading to a new hotel each day.

Meals
How do meals work during the camping trips?
How do meals work during the camping trips?
Any meals that are prepared/cooked at camp are a group effort. Your Guide cannot make meals for the entire group themselves so everyone will participate in preparing, cooking and cleaning. If the group does not want to help cook and clean, they can opt to eat out.
Markets are extremely limited in Iceland. The group will need to decide the day before if they would like to prepare a meal at their campsite or eat out so they can make a stop at the market.
For all meals, you'll have the option to eat out (all campsites have options nearby) or cook at camp.
Lunches aren't included on my itinerary and we will be on the road during that time. How will that work?

Since you will be on the road, your Guide will make sure to make a stop around lunch time. There will be options for a sit-down meal or grab and go. Many places take card but plan to have some cash just in case!

Tipping
How much should I plan to tip?
How much should I plan to tip?
Tipping is uncommon in Iceland as a 15% tip is built into most restaurants.
Tips for Guides and drivers are not included in your trip costs. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a meaningful way to show appreciation and provides supplemental income for local teams. If they have enhanced your experience, consider rewarding their efforts with a tip. Below are tipping suggestions:
For Guides, it is recommended to tip $10-20 USD per person/per day
For Drivers, it is recommended to tip $10 per person/per day
