Cultural Etiquette

Are there any cultural etiquette or social norms that I should be aware of in South Korea?

  • Respect Elders: Always greet and interact respectfully with older people.

  • Remove Shoes Indoors: When entering traditional accommodations, temples, or some restaurants.

  • No Loud Conversations in Public: Koreans prefer quiet environments in public transport and shared spaces.

Currency

Should I exchange currency?

South Korea is highly card-friendly—most places accept Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX.

It's recommended to carry ₩100,000–₩200,000 (approximately $75–$150 USD) in cash for small vendors, taxis, and emergencies.

Where is the best place to exchange currency?

  1. ATM Withdrawals – Best Option

    • Use global ATMs at 7-Eleven, GS25, or major banks (KB Kookmin, Woori, Shinhan, etc.) for competitive exchange rates.

    • Check with your bank for foreign transaction fees before withdrawing.

  2. Currency Exchange at Incheon Airport

    • Convenient but may have slightly worse rates than ATMs.

    • If you prefer to exchange some cash before leaving the airport, this is an option.

    • If you're planning on exchanging a larger amount of currency, it might be better to wait until you reach the city for a better rate.

Is tipping customary in South Korea?

Tipping is not customary, but the trend has shifted in recent years due to tourism and Western influence. Although tips are not expected from hospitality workers, it is appreciated.

  • For Guides, it is recommended to tip $5 USD per person/day

  • For Drivers, it is recommended to tip $1 per person/day

  • For Restaurants, it is recommended to tip 5-10% of the total bill

Tips can be given in Korean Won (KRW).

Luggage

How much should I pack?

As we will be using shared transfers and spaces throughout our tour we recommend all travelers pack as lightly as possible. Please review our luggage restrictions below.

Luggage Restrictions purple

Is there any flexibility with the luggage restrictions?

The luggage restrictions we set are designed to ensure that all travelers and their luggage can fit comfortably on the included transfers. This is especially important in South Korea, where the group will be traveling by public train at times, and additional space cannot be guaranteed.

Meals

Is the water safe to drink?

While tap water in Korea is 100 percent safe to drink, most Koreans don't drink it unless they boil or filter it first.

Are vegan and vegetarian meal options available?

Our Trip Operator and Guides strive to accommodate all dietary restrictions; however, additional preparations may be required. To ensure your needs are met, please note any dietary restrictions on your trip form and submit it by the deadline.

Are there any important dining etiquette rules I should be aware of when eating in South Korea?

  • Wait for the eldest person to begin eating as a sign of respect.

  • Pour drinks with both hands as a gesture of courtesy.

  • Never stick chopsticks upright in rice, as it resembles a funeral ritual. Instead, place them flat across your bowl or on the chopstick rest.

  • Avoid wasting food and picking items out of your meal to set aside (bones excluded), as this is considered disrespectful.

Is sharing food common?

Meals are often served family-style, and it’s common for people to share food.

Transportation

What does public transportation look like?

South Korea's subway and bus systems are affordable and efficient. Consider purchasing a T-money card, which can be used for buses, subways, and taxis.

Can I use Google Maps?

Google Maps may not be as reliable in South Korea, so it's recommended to use Naver Map or KakaoMap for accurate navigation.

While subway stations feature English signage, some train lines and buses may only have Korean text. Downloading one of these apps will help ensure you can easily navigate the transit system.

Is Uber or Lyft available?

South Korean taxi drivers protested against ridesharing apps, so major apps like Uber or Lyft are unavailable. Taxis are relatively affordable, but it's helpful to have the destination written in Korean. KakaoTaxi is a popular app for booking taxis.

Will this itinerary involve a significant amount of walking?

Yes, expect plenty of walking, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes!
