Accommodations

What kind of accommodations will we be staying at on our trip?

You will be staying at a hotel while in Ulaanbaatar. During the rest of your time in Mongolia, you will be staying in Yurt camps.

Activities

What are alternate options if someone is afraid of riding a camel?

The other option is to hike on the cliff's ridge, take pictures, and watch the sunset over the edge of the Flaming Cliffs.

Currency

Are tips included?

In Mongolia tipping is not considered to be conventionally traditional, however, Mongolians working in tourism and service-related positions appreciate them. If the local teams have added to the experience, please reward them. Below are tipping suggestions:

  • For Guides, it is recommended to tip $10 USD per person/per day

  • For Drivers, it is recommended to tip $10 USD per person/per day

  • At restaurants, it is recommended to tip 10% of the total bill

  • For Hotel staff who assist with luggage, it is recommended to tip $1-2 USD per bag

  • For Hotel housekeeping staff, it is recommended to tip $1 per person/per day

Meals

Is the water safe to drink?

Tap water should be avoided by Travelers. For drinking water, make sure to drink treated, filtered, or boiled water, even in the capital.

Are there places available to buy snacks or drinks?

If you would like to buy snacks or drinks, you can buy these from your tourist yurt camps, but these tend to be a little costly. Therefore, it is also suggested you buy items from the supermarket or smaller markets on the way.

Transfers

What does public transportation look like?

Ulaanbaatar has a good bus network whether traveling to different parts of the city or even out to the countryside. Otherwise, there are plenty of taxis that circulate around the city.

Is Uber or Lyft available?

There are no ride-share apps in Mongolia as they were deemed illegal since the Mongolian Taxi Services Association shut down Uber, Lyft and local start-up called EasyRide.

Please refer to the Trip Prep guide here for additional information about Mongolia.
