Accommodations

Will sleeping pads be provided for this trip?

Sleeping pads are provided, but sleeping bags and pillows are not

Are mosquito nets provided? Are they recommended?

The tents do not have mosquito nets - so it is recommended that you bring one if you would like one. The locations you will be traveling to on the itinerary and spending the night in are not mosquito-prone areas - but it is completely up to you if you would like to bring one.

Travel Safety

Where can I find information on travel safety?

Check out the US Department of State's website for the most up-to-date information on safety while traveling.

Please try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables, and use the safe on the overland truck to store the bulk of your money, passport, and airline tickets. It’s also a good idea to purchase a money belt or pouch that is easily hidden. We strongly recommend that you photocopy all important documents e.g. passport, vaccination certificate, etc. and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it very much easier to obtain replacements if necessary.

Currency

Are tips included in the cost of my trip?

Tips for Guides, drivers, and restaurant staff are not included in your trip costs. While tipping is not mandatory, it is a meaningful way to show appreciation and provides supplemental income for local teams. If they have enhanced your experience, consider rewarding their efforts with a tip. Below are tipping suggestions:

  • For Guides, it is recommended to tip $5-10 USD per person/per day

  • For Drivers, it is recommended to tip $3-4 USD per person/per day

  • For restaurants (full service), it is recommended to tip 10% of the total bill

Meals

Is the water safe to drink?

The quality of tap water in Kenya is inconsistent and should not be trusted for drinking unless it is boiled.

Transfers

What does public transportation look like?

There are taxis and buses in the major towns. The Kenyan road network is very efficient and covers the vast majority of the country and all major cities. Uber is available in Nairobi.

Please refer to the Trip Prep guide here for additional information about Kenya.
