Traveler FAQs: California

California, United States, Education, Traveler FAQ

Updated over 2 weeks ago

We offer several trips to California, with different itineraries. However, we are often asked frequent questions regarding what to prepare. From accommodations to tipping Guides, you can find the answers here!

Accommodation

Can I purchase a single (private) tent?

No, we are not selling single tents for any camping trips. All Travelers will have a shared, double occupancy tent unless there are an uneven number of Travelers.

If there is an uneven number, then a single tent will be assigned to a Traveler who will be selected at random. Hosts will have a private tent if originally requested

Can I bring my own tent?

No, the campsites we use have a maximum number of tents allowed per campsite, and for this reason we are unable to accommodate additional tents.

What type of sleeping pad is provided?

Our Operating Partner in California, Incredible Adventures, uses inflatable sleeping pads from ALPS Mountaineering.

Do I always have access to water and a bathroom in each trailhead or around our campsite?

There's usually water and bathrooms located at each trailhead, but not always. In cases where there aren't bathrooms or water available at the trailheads, our Guides will prep you in advance to make sure you're bringing enough water and will stop off for a bathroom break before hitting the trail.

Campsites will have primitive bathrooms.

Are there showers at our campsites?

The campsites that we use do occasionally change, so please reach out if you are staying at a campsite that is not listed below. That said, the following are sites we often use:

  • Big Sur Campground - free showers available

  • Sequoia RV Ranch - Showers are coin operated and cost 50 cents for 4 minutes, after which 25 cents can be added for 2 mins more as long as required. Only quarters are accepted, and change can be made in the campground's office during office hours.

  • Yosemite Lakes Campground - free showers available

Gear

What gear will be provided for me?

Tents, sleeping pads, trekking poles, stoves, cookware, bowls, cups, utensils, and first aid kits. Some of this gear will be individual to you (like a sleeping pad) and some will be available for the group's use (like the first aid kit).

Camping chairs will also be provided.

We have a day where we leave our packs behind and take day packs for a hike -- do I need to bring my own day pack?

No, you do not! These will be provided for you if you don't have your own.

Is there a safe place I can store my stuff when away from camp?

There will be a trailer and you can store your luggage there. It locks, so it’s secure when you are away from camp. That said, we'd recommend you keep anything of sincere or irreplaceable value on your person, as we'd hate for you to lose what is most important to you!

Will there be a space for me to leave behind luggage that I am not taking on the backpacking trip?

First, please note that this question is not relevant to every itinerary, so make sure to check if you have overnight backpacking!

If you do, you can store your extra luggage in the van while you are on the backpacking portion of the trip.

Do I need to pack toilet paper and/or towels?

You will be provided all the things necessary for disposing of human waste, including toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and trowel. You'll also go over the proper etiquette of digging catholes, etc. during an orientation meeting with your group!

Guides

How many Guides will be on my trip?

There will be 2 Guides for trips that have more than 6 Travelers, including the Host(s).

Are tips included? If there are multiple Guides on my trip, how much should I tip them?

Tips are not included. Tipping is greatly appreciated but is always at your discretion. We recommend tipping between 6-12% of your trip cost. If the local teams have added to the experience, please reward them.

You only need to offer one tip as the Guides will split it up amongst themselves.

Meals

What will the meals be like?

You can expect the Guide(s) to prepare amazing backcountry gourmet meals that includes a healthy mix of fresh and dried ingredients to ensure healthy and nutritious meals! You and your fellow Travelers will help the Guide prep your meals, as well. The Guides design their own menu, so each trip's meals will be different.

Dietary restrictions will be factored in so long as you include your dietary restrictions and/or allergies on your Trip Form. Adjustments for unknown dietary requirements on trip may not be accommodated.

Will food, snacks, and coffee be provided?

Yes! All food and drinks will be provided for you. And yes, lots and lots of coffee will be available! That said if you have a favorite snack that you want to make sure you have, please feel free to bring it with you.

Will there be filtered water to drink?

Yes, there will be filtered water for you to drink and our Trip Operator will provide the filtration system needed for more water. We would also recommend you consider purchasing a water bottle that has its own filtration system or a Life Straw if you'd like to have your own personal filtration system.

Transportation

Can I drive myself and park at the campsite?

We highly discourage Travelers from driving to the campsite, but may be able to accommodate (1) per trip based on special requests and Operator approval. If more than (1) Traveler is requesting to drive, we may need to deny all requests to be fair to all Travelers.

We encourage you to park your vehicle at the airport or other nearby location and meet your group on Day 1 for the group transfer to the campsite.

Due to campsite regulations, there is a limited number of vehicles allowed per campsite. Also, the group enters and visits parks prior to setting up camp, meaning you would need to pay your own entrance fees since you aren’t in the same vehicle as the group. Cell service is also non-existence in many of the parks that the groups visit, so it would be near impossible for you to connect with the guide to coordinate where to meet if you happen to get separated on the drive to and within the park.

Is there a separate location where I can park my car other than the airport?

You can park at any parking facility you choose so long as you meet the group at the airport on time.

Are arrival airport transfers flexible on timing?

No, they are not. All of these trips are camping trips, so the group will transfer from the airport to the first campsite (typically a long driving distance). It’s important travelers book within flight guidelines to ensure there’s enough time for all activities on the itinerary for Day 1. No exceptions can be made here.

Please double check your Trip Page for specific flight guidelines for each trip, below are general guidelines.

The transfer window of 12:00 - 12:15pm is strict because the group will need to drive approximately 4.5 hours from SFO to Yosemite. Once the group arrives in Yosemite, they will go on a hike, set up camp and make dinner together. The group needs to leave SFO within the transfer window to ensure there’s enough time for all activities on Day 1.

If you have booked your flights to arrive after 12:15pm, we highly encourage you to rebook your flight to an earlier time.

Are departure airport transfers flexible on timing?

Due to driving distance from the last location to the airport, travelers will need to book their departure flights within the flight guidelines to join the group departure airport transfer. Otherwise, they will need to arrange their own transportation to get back to the airport for their departure. No exceptions can be made here.

If travelers have booked early departure flights, please encourage them to book a later flight to meet flight guidelines.

Please double check your Trip Page for specific flight guidelines for each trip.

For California, please book your flight to depart after 6pm.

Please refer to the Trip Prep guide here for additional information about California.
