Access
What is the access to the internet like?
What is the access to the internet like?
Internet access is generally good in hotels and tourist areas, but it's limited in more remote areas. Some fast-food chains, restaurants, and cafes have free wi-fi available but may require a Chinese phone number to receive the login code. The login prompts may also be in Chinese.
Chinese governments and authorities keep strong controls over internet access, and many Western websites, including social media and news outlets, are censored.
We highly recommend you download the WeChat app during your visit, which is the country’s most popular communication app. This is also the way you'll be able to stay in touch with your fellow Travelers and Guide while you're on the ground.

What are the bathrooms typically like?
What are the bathrooms typically like?
Squat toilets are most common throughout China, though in some places where tourism is heavier, you may find a flushing, western style toilet. We would recommend bringing your own hand sanitizer and toilet paper, as public restrooms rarely have either of these.
Food and Beverage
Can I drink the tap water?
Can I drink the tap water?
While water quality is improving, drinking tap water still isn't recommended in China due to pollution and natural contamination of water supplies.
It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables before eating.
We'd recommend purchasing a reusable water bottle that has a filter straw in it to make staying hydrated extra easy.
Where will the Hutong Dumpling Making Class be?
Where will the Hutong Dumpling Making Class be?
The Hutong Dumpling Making Class will be at a local family's home, so it depends on the day! The family will be located in the Hutong area around the Bell and Drum Towers, which is a traditional neighborhood that lies on the central axis of Beijing.
After you're finished making and eating your fill of dumplings, you'll have time to go up to the Bell Tower or Drum Tower for a bird’s eye view of the Old Town Hutong area in Beijing. This area is also within walking distance to the Back Lake (Shichahai Hutongs), which is also a well-known area for small shops, restaurants, and bars.
Please note that not all trips have the Hutong Dumpling Making Class, so please check your itinerary to see if it is included.
